Houses of Parliament, London
This was part of a large contract within the Palace of Westminster (Houses of Parliament) in London, overseen by Paye Stonework and Restoration.
The main part of this job was to cut-out, recarve and piece-in half of the shield depicting the relief gothic-style lions.
It was a lovely piece of carving to complete in the knowing that the detail had, in fact, originally been designed by Ausustus Pugin.
There were also several sections to replace to the plumes (note the lighter coloured sections of stone) and smaller elements to the crown.
The stone used was from a salvaged block of 'Anstone' (the original limestone used for the Houses of Parliament). With the Anstone quarry now defunct, most of the works carried-out used 'Clipsham', a far inferior limestone to carve.
The original work was carved beautifully. Having been hand-cut confidently and deeply, there remain crisp arrices and the rhythmic tool marks of the highly-skilled craftsmen of the 19th Century.
